First Things First
Dominique Koukol
Ok, so you’ve experienced the
shock of a lay off or closing and now have a mountain of things you are trying to figure out. Questions
are starting to mount in your head that you didn’t think of when you first
received the news. Questions about benefits coverage, unemployment compensation,
resume updating, job search processes etc.
What to do first? Only you
can determine what your priorities are, but something to consider may be
contacting your Human Resources Department if they are still in business. An
appointment with them could clear up many questions regarding benefit coverage
through COBRA or other options they offer. The sooner the better. Chances are
you have 30 days to opt into any benefit options.
While you are there, it may be
helpful to get copies of your most recent performance evaluation or at least a
statement on the company letterhead regarding the layoff situation and what your
employment status was at the time of separation. (i.e.: employee is in good
standing). This could prove helpful in your job search.
Another thing to think about
is getting a letter of reference from your supervisor or other professionals you
worked with in this most recent position. Time has a way of separating us when
we all are busy with our lives and we can lose track of each other. Before that
happens contact those you can and get some reference letters. Return the favor
if you can. Try to keep in touch so that if they change locations you still know
how to contact them so you can use them for a reference. (a current phone number
always helps). :-)
To your Success,
Dominique
