Outline Resume

A Quick Checklist Guide for Gauging the Effectiveness of your Resume.

I. Heading

Y

N

Is your personal information correct?

Is your email professional sounding?

Did you use a header? (electronic screening programs can’t view headers and footers)

II. Professional Objective

Did you write a professional objective statement? (my personal bias and those of HR recruiters I’ve surveyed is DON’T.)

You are stating the obvious. If you are applying for the job, you obviously want it. Instead use this precious space to write a BRIEF Professional Summary of what you are offering. This is a form of personal branding and marketing.

III. Key Words/ Price of Admission Competencies

Is your resume key word rich?

Are your key words industry and job specific?

Does your resume contain all the relevant Price of Admission Competencies?

IV. Work Experience

Are your key words and Price of Admission Competencies  quantified in your work experience?

Do you focus on the competencies most relevant for the position you seek?

Is your work history primarily just a recitation of your past work positions and responsibilities?

Do you quantify accomplishments in a measurable fashion?

V.  Formatting

Is your resume formatted correctly for the specified type of electronic submission? (IE: ASCII or Plain Text or Word)

Is your resume no more than 1 page for every 10 years of experience?

Does your industry have any type of “Industry Standard” they require/prefer for resumes?

Is your font usage, bulleting, indenting, tense consistent?

This outline resume checklist is meant to ensure you have considered the primary elements into what makes the most effective resume for today’s electronic screening process. It is not rocket science, though it does require a little “insider understanding” about how today’s electronic screening processes and selection processes work.
